Early in the 20th century, under the leadership of a priest from Bari, Italy, the Gothic St Nicholas Italian Church was built with a 65-foot tower.  The church attracted Roman Catholics from Newfoundland and West Indian backgrounds as well as the Italian community.  Though the Mass was in Latin, sermons were in both English and Italian.  The church burned to the ground in 1975.  The Cultural Center replaced the church.  It is a simple structure with an inset movable altar.  Mass is held for the Italian community every Sunday by clergy from Holy Redeemer Parish.
